The History of The EUROs

Early Beginnings of The European Championships

The UEFA European Championship (commonly known as Euro and not  to be confused with European Cup) has existed since 1960. It ranks next to the FIFA World Cup as the most prestigious completion for  national teams.

The first edition of the UEFA European Championship included only four teams  (Czechoslovakia, France, Soviet Union and Yugoslavia), but it would be expanded to  eight teams in 1980. Since then, the tournament has been expanded with more teams on two  additional occasions.

Though the first European Championship was held in 1960, the idea behind it is much older. It dates  back to 1927, when the French Football Federation’s administrator Henri Delaunay first proposed a  pan-European football tournament. Despite the fact that he later became the first General Secretary of  UEFA, Delaunay had already passed away by the time the tournament was officially started. In his honor, the tournament trophy was named after him.

The two most successful nations in the tournament’s history are Germany and Spain, with three titles  each. Spain is the only nation to successfully defend its title, having done so in 2012. Germany has  played the most matches (53), scored the most goals (75) and recorded the most victories (28). In  1984, France became the only nation to win all of its matches at a tournament (5 out of 5). In 1992,  Denmark won the title with only two victories in five games.

The EUROs Winners Trophy

The Henri Delaunay trophy contains a figure of a juggling boy on the back and the words  "Championnat d'Europe,” and "Coupe Henri Delaunay" on the front.

In 2008, it was remodeled to make  it larger and more in line with UEFA’s more modern trophies. The new trophy is made of sterling silver,  weighs 8 kilograms (18 lb), and is 60 centimeters (24 in) tall. The names of the winning countries are  now engraved on the back.

Future Direction

Over the years, the European Championship (the Euros) has gotten more popular with TV audiences. In 2016, the total live audience for the expanded 51-match tournament grew to 2 billion viewers. When compared to  Euro 2012, this amounted to an increase of 100 million. These totals were mostly raised by audiences  in Brazil and China, where the 1300 GMT slot had a big impact. The final match between Portugal and  France attracted 600 million people.

UEFA U21 Men's Euros

The UEFA European Under-21 Championship is a biennial football (held once every two years) tournament which is competed by the European men's under-21 national teams of the UEFA member associations.

Since 1978, the UEFA European Under-21 Championship has been contested in its current form with Yugoslavia emerging as inaugural champions.

Before the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, there was an Under-23 Challenge Cup which was held from 1967 to 1970.

Later in 1972, a UEFA European Under-23 Championship was started with Czechoslovakia winning the first edition. Hungary won the second edition in 1974 before the Soviet Union clinched it in 1976.

UEFA later reduced the age limit to 21 for the 1978 UEFA European Championship.

Also known as the UEFA Under-21 Championship or the Euro Under-21, the football competition has served as the UEFA qualification tournament for the Summer Olympics since 1992.

Spain and Italy are the most decorated teams in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship history, having won five titles each.

Germany and England are next in terms of the most UEFA European Under-21 Championship triumphs. They've both won it three times, while the likes of Russia, and Netherlands have won it twice each.

The UEFA European Under-21 Championship Trophy

The UEFA European Under-21 Championship Trophy (pictured above on the left) was created by craftsmen on the Venetian island of Murano. The central glass vase is finished with brass, nickel, and 24-carat gold.

The original trophy, which is used for the official presentation ceremony at the final, remains in UEFA's keeping at all times. A full-size replica is awarded to the winning association.

Each association that competes in the final tournament will receive a commemorative plaque, while 35 gold medals are presented to the winning team and 35 silver medals to the runners-up. The teams beaten in the semi-finals will each receive 35 bronze medals.

UEFA U17 Men's Euros

UEFA launched an Under-16 Championship in 1980 and it became an U17 event two decades later.

The UEFA European Under-16 Championship, the first edition of which ran from 1980 until 1982, was the place where stars such as Thierry Henry and Luís Figo took their first step towards the limelight. And since the switch to U17 classification in 2001/02 the likes of England's Wayne Rooney, Spain's Cesc Fàbregas, Gerard Piqué and David de Gea, Germany's Mario Götze and Toni Kroos, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Belgium's Eden Hazard have followed in their footsteps.

UEFA U19 Women's Euros

The UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship, commonly known as the UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship, is an annual continental tournament for the under-19 women’s national teams of UEFA member associations. Founded in 1997 as an under-18 competition, it was restructured into an under-19 event in 2002. While the championship is a standalone competition that crowns a champion, the tournaments held in odd-numbered years also serve as the region's FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship takes place in the summer (June or July) and features eight teams divided into two groups of four. All participants, including the host nation, compete in a qualifying tournament, although the host is automatically qualified regardless of the outcome. The group stage follows a single round-robin format, with each team playing every other side in their group once. The top two countries from each group advance to the knockout stage.

The knockout stage consists of a semifinal and final, both played in a single-elimination format (the winner progresses to the next round, loser crashes out). The inaugural season is the exception, with France and Denmark locking horns in the 1998 final and the latter triumphing 4-3 on aggregate over two legs.

After the 2023 decision to expand the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup from 16 to 24 teams, UEFA was allocated five slots, with this tournament qualifying the four semifinalists and the winner of a playoff between the two third-placed teams from the group stage in odd-numbered years.
Spain, Germany, and France have dominated this competition, winning all but three of the first ten editions, with Germany securing half of those titles. Spain excelled between 2017 and 2024, claiming victory in five out of six tournaments, with France winning once during that period.

UEFA U17 Women's Euros

First held in 2008, the tournament was won by Germany, beating France 3-0 in the final, with England finishing in Fourth.

The UEFA Women's U17 Euros tournament format consists of three phases. It is made up of two qualifying rounds open to all eligible nations and the finals phase which is composed of 8 qualified teams.

In 2011, the tournament was expanded to eight teams and in 2014, the eight qualified teams play round-robin in two groups of four.

The Finalissima

The Artemio Franchi Cup

In 1985 and 1993, the winners of the prior UEFA European Championship and Copa America tournaments played in the Artemio Franchi Cup (also known as the European/South American Nations Cup), a one-off match organized by UEFA and CONMEBOL.

It was the national team equivalent to the former version of the Intercontinental Cup based on the club level, which was played between the winners of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League and the Copa Libertadores. France won the 1985 Artemio Franchi Cup in Paris, while Argentina won the 1993 match in their home city of Mar del Plata. However, the competition was discontinued for an extended period.

The Artemio Franchi Cup can also be considered to be a precursor of the FIFA Confederations Cup too.

On 12 February 2020, UEFA and CONMEBOL signed a renewed memorandum of understanding in order to enhance cooperation between the two organizations. As part of the agreement, a joint UEFA–CONMEBOL committee examined the possibility of staging European–South American intercontinental matches, for both men's and women's football and across various age groups. This saw the rebirth of the Artemio Franchi Cup tournament in the modern football era as the Finalissima competition.
